Vamos Luiz Arraez I’m sure was said with lots of enthusiasm across Miami for a little over a year. For good reason, I’m sure it was cheered upon cause Luis Arraez in his short tenure with the Miami Marlins of 180 games total became the heart and soul of the Miami Marlins. He was a fantastic leader in the clubhouse, had a great work ethic and embodied the culture of Miami. His embodiment of the culture Miami was certainly helped by his Venezuelan heritage.
Luis Arraez in his just over a season worth of games was a huge catalyst in leading the Marlins to their first postseason appearance in a full season since 2003, he took home the National league batting title for a second consecutive year finishing with a batting average of .354 on the season. Arraez wasn’t known for his power, but his ability to get on base and get clutch hits along with playing with real joy on the field made him a joy to watch. Luis Arraez you’ll be missed by this Marlins fan and the entire fan base. Acquiring you for Pablo Lopez was a win-win anyone who says else wise doesn’t know how to enjoy the small things in life well enough.
As the Marlins traded away Arraez, who many have been calling the 21st century version of Tony Gwynn, what did they get in return? The Marlins in their return of trading Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres making his comparison to Tony Gwynn only more fitting received one active relieve pitcher and three minor league prospects. The relief pitcher is Woo-Suk Go who is a 5’11 throws right-handed and is 25 years old. Marlins prospects that haven’t seen a major league field received in the trade are Nathan Martorella, Dillon Head, and Jakob Marsee. Head and Marsee are outfielders by trade and Martorella is a utility esque player as he can play 1B and in the outfield.
So Woo-Suk Go, I am a Marlins fan and trading for a 25 year old supposed experienced relief pitcher with this name in a deal that loses us our star player it’s a cruel joke. However, we have yet to see Woo-Suk Go pitch for the Marlins he may become a consistent reliever in the lineup. Also, it’s not to be unexpected that the Marlins made this move in moving Luis Arraez. For, the Miami Marlins did very little it can be argued if not actively took away in terms of level of talent that was on the team from last season. For the Marlins didn’t resign Soler, traded Berti to the Yankees and let Wendle walk as well. So, those moves especially Berti and Wendle didn’t kill the offense, but from performance on the field would be nice to have consistent bats that are great defensive players.
A little more on these incoming prospects Marsee and Martorella were traded in the middle of their double A game. This led to a funny thing in which Martorella had to be pinch run for on second base. All three players that are straight prospects are going to be top 15 in the Marlins prospect pool with Head and Marcee being top 10 prospects. I will conclude with the obvious for Marlins fans everywhere now the fire sale is hot and ready to serve and it’ll be serving up a lot of potentially key role players on competing teams.
