Angels Hire Ron Washington as Manager

Published on

The Angels are expected to hire Ron Washington as their next manager, Los Angeles announced on Wednesday. Former Mets manager Buck Showalter was also reportedly a finalist for the job, according to The New York Post’s Jon Heyman.

Washington got his first managerial opportunity with the Rangers over a decade ago, managing Texas between 2007 and ’14 following 10 years in the Athletics organization. In that span, Washington won 664 games and led Texas to back-to-back American League titles in 2010 and ’11, although the Rangers lost in both of those World Series.

After 2014, Washington resigned from his position with the Rangers due to personal reasons. After returning to coaching with the Athletics in the middle of the 2015 season, he joined the Braves as their third-base coach in 2017, and helped Atlanta win the 2021 World Series title.

Washington will be 71 years old when he manages his first game with the Angels, making him the oldest manager in the league since Dusty Baker retired. He replaces Phil Nevin, who managed the team for over a year following the firing of Joe Maddon.
