On February 27th in Baseball History…

1901 – The National League Rules Committee has announced a series of rule changes aimed at enhancing the game’s flow and reducing costs associated with lost foul balls. Under the new regulations, all fouls will now count as strikes, with the exception of foul balls occurring after two strikes. Additionally, batters who repeatedly foul off good strikes will face disciplinary action.

Among the other rule changes, catchers are now required to position themselves within 10 feet of the batter, ensuring a more dynamic interaction between pitcher and batter. Furthermore, pitchers must deliver the ball to a ready and waiting batter within 20 seconds to maintain the pace of the game.

In an effort to promote sportsmanship and respect on the field, players caught using indecent or improper language will face ejection by the umpire. Finally, a ball will be called if a batter is struck by a pitch, providing additional protection for hitters.

1907 – The New York Highlanders acquire catcher (and future Hall of Fame executive) Branch Rickey from the St. Louis Browns.

1908 – The sacrifice fly rule has been officially adopted. Under this rule, no time at bat will be charged to a player if a run scores after the catch of a fly ball. However, it’s worth noting that the rule will undergo revisions in the following years. In 1931, it will be repealed, only to be reinstated or altered multiple times before finally gaining permanent acceptance in 1954.

1912 – The New York Yankees announce their decision to incorporate pinstripes into their uniforms. However, it will take a few seasons before this new look is fully realized. The famous uniforms will make their debut appearance during the team’s home opener in 1915.

1948 – Pie Traynor and Herb Pennock are elected to the Hall of Fame

2002 – The sale of the Boston Red Sox to a group headed by John Henry becomes official.

2011 – Hall of Famer Duke Snider dies in Escondido, CA.
