Mets dealing with unique uniform issue this spring

Published on

Much has been said this spring about frustrations felt by MLB players regarding the uniforms they’ve sported this season.

Outfielder Brandon Nimmo told Tim Healey of Newsday on Sunday that the New York Mets haven’t yet worn their black jerseys or alternate blue home jerseys during the ongoing campaign because the club is still waiting to receive the necessary pants from Nike and Fanatics.

“There’s a serious problem when a $13B industry is having a tough time getting pants from a worldwide industry that is supposed to be at the forefront of apparel and whatnot,” a perturbed Nimmo explained. “We can’t wear our blacks, we can’t wear our blues because we don’t have our pants, and I hear that it’s a problem with other teams as well.”

According to Healey, the St. Louis Cardinals haven’t yet received alternate jerseys they plan to wear on Saturdays. The Mets were able to feature their new City Connect uniforms during this past weekend’s home series against the Cardinals.

“It’s one set of pants for two jersey tops that we can’t wear in a major-league season because they don’t have it available,” Nimmo told Healey. “It’s a problem that they need to solve for sure. And not a small problem, either.”

The Mets previously were scheduled to rock their Friday black jerseys versus the Kansas City Royals on April 12 and against St. Louis on the final Friday of April. New York’s next Friday home game is against the division-rival Atlanta Braves on May 10. Healey said the Mets should have the corresponding pants for those black jerseys by May 7, but Nimmo seems to be embracing an “I’ll believe it when I see it” mentality.

“This is supposed to be the pinnacle of the sport,” Nimmo added. “To have three or four different jerseys should not be a big deal.”

Also on Sunday, it was reported that issues regarding everyday MLB uniforms will be addressed by the start of the 2025 season. Specifically, players dislike that the pants are made of a see-through material, that letters for names on the back of jerseys are smaller than during previous seasons and how the current jerseys collect sweat.
