MLB making changes to uniforms after player criticism

Published on

The players of Major League Baseball spoke and it seems that the league has listened.

Following months of complaints from players regarding changes to the uniforms for the 2024 season, the league informed them in a memo this week that significant changes will be made to fix the problem.

That comes via a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Sunday night.

Among the changes to be made are a return to larger letters for names on the back, fixing mismatched gray colors and fixing the jerseys that have been criticized for collecting sweat. They are also going to make changes to the pants after players complained in the spring they were see-through.

The league emphasized it was a Nike issue and that the company was trying to re-invent something that did not need to be re-invented.
Ultimately this will go down as an all-time blunder by the league for making a completely unnecessary change. It was marketing and branding becoming too big of an element in the game.

There is no official word on when the changes will be rolled out, but it is believed to be by the start of the 2025 season at the absolute latest.
The jerseys collecting sweat, pants being see-through and letters being too small were not the only problem with the uniform rollout. Teams and players were also not getting uniforms or pants on time, forcing players to wear old uniforms in spring training while some teams did not get their new city connect uniforms in a timely manner.

The whole thing was a mess. The MLB player’s union also absolved Fanatics, saying they listened to the players complaints. The focal point of the blame remained squarely on Nike.
